Can Ibuprofen Raise Blood Pressure?

I believe the best blogs are written by people who can share there experience hence I am sharing my own experience with Ibuprofen. I began researching the dangers of high blood pressure and pain medications, specifically Ibuprofen.

None of us like pain. We run from it and will do almost anything to avoid it. But in choosing a pain medication we must be educated consumers.

A few years ago I underwent a total knee replacement. Actually two. I can honestly tell you it had been a very painful recovery. I had been taking Ibuprofen 600 mg daily to help me with my recovery. During that time my blood pressure had skyrocketed to 197/105 my wife called my sister-in-law who is a cardiac nurse. The first thing she told her was to stop all Ibuprofen.

Does ibuprofen raise blood pressure?

Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)

NSAIDs include both prescription and over-the-counter medication. They are often used to relieve pain or reduce inflammation from conditions such as arthritis. However, NSAIDs can make your body retain fluid and decrease the function of your kidney. This may cause your blood pressure to rise even higher, putting greater stress on your heart and kidneys. NSAIDs can also raise your risk for heart attack or stroke, especially in higher doses.

Common NSAIDs that can raise blood pressure include:

  • aspirin
  • celecoxib (Celebrex)
  • diclofenac (Cambia, Cataflam, Voltaren-XR, Zipsor, Zorvolex)
  • diflunisal (Dolobid – discontinued brand)
  • etodolac (Lodine – discontinued brand)
  • ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil)
  • indomethacin (Indocin)
  • ketoprofen (Active-Ketoprofen [Orudis – discontinued brand])
  • ketorolac (Toradol – discontinued brand)
  • nabumetone (Relafen – discontinued brand)
  • naproxen (Aleve, Anaprox, Naprelan, Naprosyn)
  • oxaprozin (Daypro)
  • piroxicam (Feldene)
  • salsalate (Disalsate [Amigesic – discontinued brand])
  • sulindac (Clinoril – discontinued brand)
  • tolmetin (Tolectin – discontinued brand)

You may also find NSAIDs in over-the-counter medication for other health problems. Cold medicine, for example, often contains NSAIDs. It’s a good idea whenever you purchase an over-the-counter drug to check the label for NSAIDs. Ask your doctor if any NSAID is okay for you to use. Your doctor may be able to recommend alternatives, such as using acetaminophen  instead of ibuprofen.

  1. Thank you for this. I am having this exact problem. Using a lot more Ibu than you. About 1200 mg per day for shoulder pain. Never associated this with high blood pressure, but after a long break of not using it began using 800 – 1200 mg per day for pain. Blood pressure from 132/80 to 160/90.
How long did it take for your pressure to go down?

    1. It took about 1 week. Keep flushing your system with at least 64 oz. of water daily and hydrate you kidneys. This will also flush out the system.

  2. Thank you for the advice. I was just about to take 2 Ibuprofen for the pain in hand. I took my B/P 177/76. I’m on meds for high blood pressure. Just out of the hospital for 2 heart attacks April and May. I would say this message saved my life. GOD BLESSES! I

  3. I’m having resistant high blood pressure now, I’ve been taking ibuprofen daily. Im on BP meds. Im gonna stop them and see what happens. How common is this, does anyone know? My Dr’s never suggest it.

  4. I was put on Motrin 800 about a week ago for a shoulder problem. I take metoprolol and losartin for my bp. A few days my bp started going up Tonight it was 154/100. I took an alprazalam to bring it down. I’m not taking any more of the motrin.

    1. Hi Mary, You may want to speak with your physician for an alternative to treating the pain. The more Motrin you
take and the longer you take it, it will elevate your BP. Kindest Regards, Eli, Content Manager RESPeRATE.

  5. I had a root canal 5 days ago and the pain was horrible days 1-3. Was eating ibuprofen pills just to get normal pain. My bp is usually 124/78 on average..
It skyrocket to 161/88. I am healing from RC and will be on acetaminophen

    1. I’m sorry you had a bad root canal. I had one for the first time recently , was scared because I had heard that root canals were painful. I went to an endodontist, a specialist in this. Don’t go to a regular dentist for RC, He used a new procedure called “Gentle Wave”. No pain during or after. I don’t take any NSAID’s. It causes painful tummy problems,
