Do you suffer from obstructive sleep apnea? It seems that you are not alone. Some 25 million Americans suffer from this condition. But what is it? Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition that causes breathing to repeatedly stop and start during sleep. There are several types of sleep apnea, but the most common is obstructive sleep apnea. This type of apnea occurs when your throat muscles intermittently relax and block your airway during sleep. A noticeable sign of obstructive sleep apnea is snoring.

The standard medical treatment for this disorder is a CPAP machine. CPAP continuous positive airway pressure pushes air through the nose ensuring that continuous positive pressure keeps the throat open as the individual sleeps. The biggest problem is non-compliance with the use of the device. In other words people have difficulty with the use and so they do not get benefit from the device.

But according to a new study released on Sunday the 28th of August, for people with existing cardiovascular disease and moderate to severe sleep apnea, CPAP does not prevent heart attacks, strokes, hospitalizations or death any better than sleeping without the machine.
