For example it has been shown that green tea can reduce total cholesterol, LDL’s, and triglycerides.  Green tea also dramatically increases the antioxidant capability of the blood, which protects the LDL cholesterol particles from oxidation, which is one part of the pathway towards heart disease

 

Given the beneficial effects on risk factors, it is not surprising to see that green tea drinkers have up to a 31% lower risk of cardiovascular disease according to The Journal of Nutrition. The International Journal of Epidemiology and the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Given that green tea can boost the metabolic rate in the short term, it makes sense that it could help you loose weight. Various randomized studies have proven drinking green tea help decrease fat especially in the abdominal region.One of these studies was a randomized controlled trial in 240 men and women that went on for 12 weeks. In this study, the green tea group had significant decreases in body fat percentage, body weight, waist circumference and abdominal fat .But not all randomized study prove the benefits of weight lose.

In that area today only a limited amount of amaranth grain is grown, most of which is popped and mixed with honey to make a confection called, “alegría.” However, much of the genetic base has been maintained there because amaranth has continued to grow as a wildflower.

 

Amaranth grain is a highly nutritious pseudocereal with a superior amount of proteins when compared to true cereals. It is a reasonably well-balanced food with functional properties that have been shown to provide medicinal benefits. The health benefits attributed include decreasing plasma cholesterol levels, stimulating the immune system, exerting an antitumor activity, reducing blood glucose levels and improving conditions of hypertension and anemia.

 

Amaranth was proven to have ACE-Inhibitor qualities. ACE Inhibitors have been used to: lower blood pressure, treat patients with congestive heart failure, treat patients who have experienced a heart attack, and kidney complication from diabetes.

 

Several separate medical studies provided conclusive evidence that amaranth grains did in fact lower blood pressure. According to Silva-Sanchez et. al. 2008 investigated the presence of the peptide lunasin in amaranth grains, characterized it and studied its anti-carcinogenic properties. The authors concluded that amaranth grains may be a potential source of several bio-active peptides with relevant actions on cancer and hypertension.

The usage of this plant arises from the 5000 years old traditional Indian medical system Ayurveda, especially “Rasayana”, a discipline of Ayurveda that concentrates on improving a healthy body, avoiding illness, improving the defense mechanisms, in addition to reviving as well as stimulating the body as well as thoughts (Krishnaveni, 2010). Pickled Garlic – Sweetening the Medicine

Garlic is known to lower blood pressure, but it comes with a twist. Many have a problem with the strong taste and smell. Pickled Garlic, though, makes it more favorable, taking out the smells and adding flavors. Try this recipe below an add some garlic to many of your recipes.

Ingredients:

  • 3 garlic bulbs, separated into cloves. (The amount will vary slightly depending on the size of your garlic)
  • 700 ml vinegar, eg: white wine vinegar, red wine vinegar or cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon pure salt (not table salt, which has anti-caking additives that will make the brine cloudy)
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 3 all spice berries
  • 1 whole dried chilli, or 0.5 teaspoon chilli flakes
  • spring fresh basil
  • Sterilized 500ml jar

Instructions

  1. Blanch the garlic cloves in boiling water for one minute. This will loosen the papery skins and allow you to slip them off easily, once cool
  2. Measure all the spices into a sterilized jar
  3. Add the garlic cloves
  4. Boil the vinegar, then pour it over the garlic cloves
  5. Seal the jar and leave to cool overnight, before refrigerating.

Pickled cloves can be used in place of fresh garlic. Or try using them to stuff pitted olives, served alongside cheese canapés, added to Mediterranean stews, mashed into potato with olive oil, or served alongside other zingy palate cleansers at a raclette dinner.
