My Surgical Story

Mentally I was prepared for the pain, I was prepared for the hours of rehab, and the long road to recovery. But what I wasn’t prepared for was the long nights I would walk the halls unable to sleep. For having insomnia after surgery. I, who could fall asleep in 5 minutes unaided by sleeping pills but just by breathing could no longer fall asleep until 5, 6, or 7 o’clock in the morning. I was quickly becoming unglued.

Sleep is such an important part of any surgical recovery that those around me were quickly becoming concerned about my physical and mental health. Recovering from a total knee replacement was bad enough without sleep it was becoming worse. But it seems I am not alone. According to Cleveland Clinic I was suffering from “the side effects of General Anesthesia, the discomfort from the healing process, changes in my daily routine, and stress from personal concerns.”

  • Avoid napping too much during the day.
