One of my favorite things about watching a movie with my wife, besides have time alone together, is when we can share a warm bowel of popcorn. The smell of popcorn popping, our dog wagging her tail, she loves popcorn too, and the coziness of our home makes for a wonderful Friday night. But did you know that popcorn also helps you get a great nights sleep? I didn’t know. The carbohydrates in nonfat popcorn help bring the amino acid tryptophan into your brain, where it’s used to make a sleep-inducing neurotransmitter called serotonin. Since eating a heavy meal within two hours of bedtime can keep you awake, low-calorie popcorn (just 93 calories in three cups popped) is a great late-night snack. Choose plain, fat-free popcorn and jazz it up with your favorite spice. So the next time you feel like you just have to have something to snack on while watching a great movie, don’t reach for pretzels and chips.
