Do you see your “Golden Years” as something to look forward to or something to dread? Does the thought of retirement put a smile on your face as you think about all the things you will be able to do? Or does retirement seem like something you dread, as you feel no longer useful? Do you feel that your life has a purpose?  A Harvard study actually shows how you answer those questions may determine the length of your life.

According to Dr. Laura Kubzansky, professor of social and behavioral sciences at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, ” Your outlook—having a sense of optimism and purpose—seems to be predictive of health outcomes.” Dr. Kubzansky found that emotional vitality-which constitutes being enthusiastic, hopeful, engrossed with life, and the ability to face life’s stressors with emotional parity, dramatically reduces the risks of heart attack and stroke.

How do you view life? As a glass of vintage wine half empty or half full? A positive view of life will increase you vitality everyday. Maybe the challenge looks daunting so here are a few suggestions from Dr. Kubzansky.

  1. Don’t Dwell On Your Age: Research states those who are “Young at Heart” live longer then those who feel they are not. A British study of 6,500 people, the mean age being 65, found that those who felt older then their age had a 41% chance of dying within the next 8 years compared to those who felt young.
  2. Have A Sense Of Purpose: You may feel that you are top of the world as you have to retire. Don’t let retirement dull your sense of purpose. Use those talents you have and learn new ones. Learn to play an instrument, take up painting, volunteer in your community.
  3.  Practice Mindfulness: Research is showing that a mindfulness based life style, focusing on the moment and accepting your thoughts and feelings non-judgmentally, has amazing results on your metal and physical health.
Growing older does not mean your life is over, far from it. Do not old age feel like a burden look at it as an adventure. In the immortal words of Frank Sinatra,”And if you should survive to 105 look at all you’ll derive out of being alive! And here is the best part, you have a head start If you are among the very young at heart.” Click Here To Read The Complete Article.
