Myths abound when it comes to different things in life. But when it comes to high blood pressure myths need to be busted. Like Sergeant Joe Friday used to say, “Just the facts ma’am.”  So today we want to explore the world of myths verses facts about high blood pressure.

  1. Myth: High blood pressure runs in my family. There is nothing I can do about it. Fact: High blood pressure does run in families, but only 2-3% of high blood pressure cases are genetic. However with better life style choices you do not have to follow in your families footsteps.
  2. Myth: I use kosher salt or sea salt when I cook instead of table salt. They are lower in sodium. Fact: Kosher salt and sea salt are chemically the same as table salt, 40% sodium. Table salt is a combination of 2 chemicals sodium and chloride.
  3. Myth: People with high blood pressure have anxiety, difficulty sleeping, sweating and facial flushing. I don’t have these symptoms so I am good. Fact: High blood pressure is known as the silent killer. Many people have no symptoms whatsoever. You may not even know that you are damaging your arteries and various organs.
  4. Myth:I was diagnosed with high blood pressure, but now my readings have been lower so I can stop taking my medication. Fact: High blood pressure can be a life long battle. Follow you physicians direction concerning your medication and don’t just stop taking your medication without being followed by your doctor.
