New research coming out of Indiana University led by Dr. Yiqing Song is showing that taking magnesium does indeed help lower your blood pressure. The meta-analysis looked at 2,000 patients and 34 case studies. The research consisted of double blind placebo controlled studies. This means that neither the people involved in the study or the investigators giving the magnesium where aware of who was being given the placebo, or the magnesium.

The research team concluded after further analysis of the data that taking 300 mg of magnesium supplements per day for a month could both lower blood pressure and result in higher magnesium levels in the blood. The recommended daily intake of magnesium is 400 mg per day.

The symptoms of being magnesium deficient include: agitation and anxiety, restless leg syndrome, sleep disorders, irritability, and abnormal heart rhythms to name a few.

There are a variety of foods we can eat daily to ensure we are getting enough magnesium in our diet. For instance we can eat such food items as pumpkin seeds, eggs, almonds, sunflower seeds, cacao, avocados, Brazil nuts and my favorite broccoli.

According to Dr. Song, ” Consistent with previous studies, our evidence suggests that the anti-hypertensive effect of magnesium might be only effective among people with magnesium deficiency or insufficiency. Such suggestive evidence indicates that maintenance of optimal magnesium status in the human body may help prevent or treat hypertension.”
