Q: My meds work for a few years and then for some reason they quit working. Is there any way to know which meds will work? A: Our lives and our bodies change as we get older. I suspect your blood pressure medication stopped working because of a change. Perhaps you aren't exercising as much, have gained weight, or have developed an illness such as diabetes. The only way to know for sure if a drug will work is to try it and get regular follow-up.

How Lotensin Reduces Blood Pressure Lotensin (benazepril) is one of a class of blood pressure medication called Angiotestin Converting Enzyme Inhibitors or more commonly known as ACE Inhibitors. Angiotensin II is a chemical that causes the muscles surrounding the blood vessels to contract (tighten). This in turn narrows the blood vessels. This narrowing increases the pressure within the blood vessels and can cause high blood pressure (hypertension). Lotensin slows (inhibits) the activity of the enzyme, which decreases the production of angiotensin II. As a result, the blood vessels enlarge or dilate, and the blood pressure is reduced.
