HYPERTENSION NEWS

Seasonal Variation In Blood Pressure
(Medical News Today) A French study reported in the January 12th issue of Archives of Internal Medicine has found a strong correlation between blood pressure and outdoor temperature in a large sample of the elderly. As a result, the investigators advise that, during periods of extreme temperatures, careful monitoring of blood pressure and antihypertensive treatment "could contribute to reducing the consequences of blood pressure variations in the elderly".

Studies Look At High Blood Pressure Control Among Blacks, Weight-Loss Methods
(Medical News Today) This article summarizes studies published in the January issue of the Journal of the National Medical Association. The first study suggests that the reason why blacks have poorer high blood pressure control than whites is related to insufficient adoption of treatment regimens, not because of differences in education levels, general knowledge of the condition or access to care. The second study reviewed examines the differences in weight-loss practices between whites and ethnic minorities and lower- and higher-socioeconomic status individuals

ASK DR. ROWENA

Q:What is your knowledge or experience with the efficacy of Kowalski’s Blood Pressure Cure (book + supplement regimen) or the Zona Plus - a device that supposedly can lower blood pressure?
A:In his book, Kowalski promotes healthy lifestyle changes that are keys to good blood pressure control and heart disease prevention. However, the use of supplements is always controversial. You should discuss their use with your health care provider. The Zona Plus is a device that claims to lower blood pressure by a computer guided hand gripping exercise. Unlike the RESPeRATE, it has not been cleared by the FDA. To get FDA clearance, extensive clinical studies were performed proving the effectiveness of the RESPeRATE.

Q:What is the difference between generic and brand name medications for blood pressure? If, in fact, there is little difference, why is there such a price difference?
A:Generic prescription medication is the chemical equivalent of the same brand name medication. Some people are willing to pay to have the original product. Think of it like clothing. All blue jeans of the same color, size, and style are equally good at covering your body but can vary tremendously in price based on the brand name or the company that manufactures them.

Q:Do you know if taking the supplement Alistrol provides any real reduction in high blood pressure?
A:As I always caution, the use of supplements is controversial. Some users claim great success but natural supplements are not subject to the strict scientific studies required to become a prescription medication. Also the standards for making supplements are not as controlled as for prescription medication. Personally, I feel it makes more sense to spend your money on fresh fruit and vegetables than to take supplements.

RESPeRATE USERS SAY
MJM, New York

I find that Resperate is great. I would like more people to know... that it really works. I write for a local newspaper and I have written articles about the effectiveness of Resperate. When I first started using it my blood pressure was moderately high, it tended to be in the 160/95 range. After a few weeks of Resperate I was able to normalize it, of course I also watch my diet and try to exercise when possible. Once I realized that this truly worked I shared it with my brother-in-law. We had a terrible problem with his blood pressure; he was put on a number of different medications and had severe side effects from them. I recommended it to him and he too had success in... stabilizing his blood pressure. I am a satisfied resperate user.
