Researchers say hemp and medical cannabis help lower blood pressure.
Hemp seeds are the latest superfood on the U.S. market with the hemp seed industry reaping the profits. Besides their industrial benefits, researchers have found that hemp seeds may not only treat hypertension, but may have the ability to prevent it as well.
The researchers from the University of Manitoba set out to determine the ability of diets containing hemp seed meal protein hydrolysate (HMH) to lower high blood pressure as well as the effects of diets on plasma levels of renin and angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE). Their results suggest that HMH with strong hypotensive effects “could be used as a therapeutic agent for both the prevention and treatment of hypertension.”
Hemp seeds are rich in magnesium, potassium, iron, protein, gamma-linolenic acids (GLA), and essential omega-3, -6 and -9 fatty acids that play an important role in deregulating blood pressure and inflammation. They are purported to aid in memory retention, weight loss, heart health, and to relieve stress.
The hemp seed industry is also set to grow exponentially with the increased interest in the health benefits of industrial hemp’s relative, medical marijuana. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, who is at the forefront of the movement to have medical cannabis legalized, stated that the public was “terribly and systematically mislead for nearly 70 years” and apologized for having been “too dismissive of patients whose symptoms improved from cannabis.” According to Gupta, only about 6 percent of marijuana research studies investigate the benefits of medical marijuana, while the rest “are purposely designed to investigate the negative effects.”
Cannabis is also known to reduce hypertension to normal levels with regular use and to maintain normal levels with continued use in some cases. Recent studies indicate that the body’s internal cannabinoid system plays an important role in regulating blood pressure, but a full understanding of the exact mechanisms awaits further research. Animal studies have also demonstrated that annadamide and other endocannabinoids suppress hypertension.
The hemp market is certainly facing a busy and illustrious year!
