0ff the Beaten Swing Path

Improvements can come from unlikely places
By Neil Wolkodoff

I like when a player routinely makes par without his or her ball touching the fair-way, sometimes the path to improved golf fitness and performance is the road less traveled. You may not associate the following products and techniques with golf, but they can have tremendous impacts on your health and game.

Pressure Drop

High blood pressure, the "silent killer," obviously poses a serious health risk. Chief factors are tension and stress-both of which hurt your golf game. And if you tend to play in very competitive environments or get frustrated easily during rounds, you're not doing your blood pressure or yourself any favors.

So if you are borderline hypertensive or worse, a relatively new device, called RESPeRATE, will probably lower your blood pressure, and decrease your overall tension level. The device uses a chest sensor, headphones and a small control unit.

Lie in a comfortable chair, or on a bed, and the sensor analyzes your breathing pattern and then generates two tones, one for inhaling and one for exhaling.

By following the music and tones for 15- minute sessions, three times per week, your body will relax is overall state of muscular and vascular tension.

Approved by the FDA, this device in clinical trials lowered blood pressure by up to 36 points in eight weeks. $299. resperate.com or 877-988-9388
